Welcome
to Soroptimist International of Mendocino-Sonoma Coast, Inc. (SIMSC), a locally
run, non-profit service organization. The word Soroptimist is a coined
word meaning "best for women". The organization was
founded in Oakland, California in October 1921, and since that time has
grown into a worldwide organization with over 100,000 members in 119
countries. Soroptimist members work within their communities,

and professional life.
- Strive for human rights for all people and, in
particular, to advance the status of women.
- Develop a spirit of friendship and unity among
Soroptimists of all countries.
- Develop interest in our local community as
well as national and international affairs.
- Contribute to international understanding and
universal friendship.
Message from our Club President:
Why choose “Soroptimist – Creating Magic through Action”
as a theme for the club this year? As a charter member, I look back at the
achievements of our club since 1979 and from here it all looks like it
happened by magic.
Back then there was no Redwood Coast Medical Services,
Garcia Fire and Rescue, South Coast Ambulance District, Shamli Hospice,
Point Arena Lighthouse Keepers, Point Arena Little School, Coast Community
Library, or domestic violence services on the coast. The above is a short
look at a long list of organizations or services in which SIMSC, in one way
or another, was instrumental in helping become or stay viable. Tiny step by
tiny step we have helped build this frontier, backwater town/area, that was
once renowned for the Friday night fights in the Gualala Hotel bar—it was
the loggers verses the cowboys and “nail-bending” contractors—,into a
growing, dynamic community worthy of being a destination for families and
visitors from around the nation and the world.
It was around 160 women, sharing membership in SIMSC and a
vision of the future who, through their joint action, made this and more
possible. Think of it; only 160 women working over 27 years made these
changes. If at isn’t magic, I don’t know what is. The future will be shaped
the same. That joint vision coming to life through action is what makes the
magic. This year will be a tiny step toward the next 27 years. I hope it is
magic for us all.To learn more about Soroptimist International of
